Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • Filling: 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • Icing: 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 24 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1 1/4 cups flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. Add warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Beat until combined. Gradually add remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  4. Roll dough into a 12×18 inch rectangle. Spread softened butter over dough. Sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  5. Tightly roll dough up starting from the long side. Cut into 12 slices. Place in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  6. Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. While baking, make the icing.
  7. For the icing, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, then milk until desired consistency is reached.
  8. Let cinnamon rolls cool slightly before frosting.

Notes

For extra gooey cinnamon rolls, add a layer of cream cheese filling before rolling. You can also add chopped nuts to the filling for added texture.
