Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Place chicken breasts in a slow cooker.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together apple cider vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, red pepper flakes (if using), garlic powder, and black pepper.
  3. Pour the sauce over the chicken, ensuring the chicken is coated.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours, or on high for 3-4 hours, or until the chicken is easily shredded with a fork.
  5. Remove the chicken from the slow cooker and shred it using two forks.
  6. Return the shredded chicken to the slow cooker and stir to coat it with the sauce. Let it simmer for another 15-20 minutes to allow the chicken to absorb more flavor.
  7. Season with salt to taste.
  8. Serve warm on buns, in salads, or as desired.

Notes

Serve on toasted buns with coleslaw for a classic Carolina BBQ sandwich experience. For a spicier kick, add more red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce.
